My Mom's Barbie was a brunette...I always had blond dolls even though I also have dark hair. You're right: I wanted Barbie to be like me too.

Heh, I had Barbies when I was a kid, and I consider myself a tomboy, I have a degree in computer and software engineering, and I like to mingle with guys more than with girls. Barbie was just another toy. I liked dressing her up. I didn't grow up feeling bad about myself because I wasn't shaped like her.

I do recall my last barbie, I asked my dad for a brunette barbie. All the barbies I saw so far were blond, and I wasn't, and I wanted my barbie to be something more like me. So my dad went from store to store looking for a brunette barbie (which weirdly, weren't common in Chile, my homeland), and he finally found one. The store sellers used to tell him to just take the blond one, it was the same, but my dad knew it wasn't the same for me.

Barbie continues to be a genius toy, especially since girls like to imagine themselves grown up and Barbie helps them do that

Great post. I totally agree with you. Barbie was just a tool for the imagination. Just like paper dolls or dolls or any other toy. It's up to the parents to help a child grow up well rounded.

Thank you. Your Web site is very interesting.

I agree with you, but I also think that parents should not demonize food by making it forbidden. Everything in moderation. I object to putting food kids aren't allowed to have on a shelf they can't reach right before their eyes. Don't have it in the house at all and provide healthy snack alternatives if you want to keep your kids healthy. The enemy isn't a small bag of chips on occasion...it's ten or so small bags eaten in succession by a kid hording and eating junk food in secrecy that's bad for the body and bad for the self-esteem.

Great post!

One thought though - discouraging eating fast and junk food isn't necessarily sending the message that 'success in life is tied to physical perfection'. Its sending the message that people (and not just kids or girls) should eat nutritious foods to stay healthy.
