His son overdosed, the divorce may or may not have been a factor. Young children rarely recover totally from the trauma of divorce. The feeling of betrayal and abandonment becomes part of their personality and feelings of inadequancy. I think Newman himself may have had a dependence on alcohol dependency. Newman did do alot with charity and helped many people but he was vertainly no saint, as none of us are. I think his son’s death was a heartache he had to live with his whole life and he tried very hard to make something positve of it. I admired him for that.

It’s the way of the perfect American male. No matter what she looked like or acted, his wife would be steak to him.

I understand where you’re going. It would be easy to move all the responsibility on the partner. So very easy. I think most couples do that, which is way the divorce rate is so high. I think it’s too easy to place the blame of all that is going wrong on the other person. And I think women are more sensitive to it than men because we are force fed through all forms of media that we should be STEAK even if we aren’t, even if our men perfer us to be chicken, sushi or pizza.
